Alaya Panama, Azuero Peninsula
Why we’re watching it: a jungle-to-ocean sanctuary where two troops of resident monkeys are part of the welcome.
Alaya is a private wellness estate in the hills of Cañas, with geodesic domes, jungle casitas and private-pool suites close to Playa Venao’s surf. Its calendar is wonderfully varied: yoga, sound and energy healing, breathwork, surf and farm-to-table nourishment. The one to watch is the 3-day Digital Detox & Mindfulness retreat. It opens with a phone surrender ceremony, runs on movement, meditation and ocean sunsets, and is capped at 16 guests.

02 — The Destination
Why we’re watching it: A 500-acre rainforest in New Zealand’s South Island, with just seven villas.
Maruia River Retreat – South Island, New Zealand
Days here move slowly: forest yoga, guided nature walks, river dips, then sauna and the magnesium pool. Evenings bring chef-led seasonal dinners and a private villa with birdsong outside. It’s built for solo travellers and couples, with a maximum of 12 guests. Maruia was named one of the World’s Most Extraordinary Spas (2026), and the dark sky corridor means the Milky Way is part of the stay. From NZ$990 per night, minimum two nights.

03 — Under the Radar
Why we’re watching it: A 12-villa jungle hideaway on Panama’s Pacific coast, still off most retreat radars.
Villa Coco – Santa Catalina, Panama
Wake to jungle and ocean, spend the days between the waves and the infinity pool, and gather in the evenings over locally sourced meals. Villa Coco is a family-run boutique property with outdoor showers, open-air living and surf at La Punta within walking distance. Coiba National Park, a UNESCO-listed marine reserve, is nearby. With only 12 villas, it works well for full buyouts, and it already hosts surf and yoga retreats with partners .
